Ken Lum wins Gershon Iskowitz Prize 2019

Ken Lum has been awarded with Art Gallery of Ontario’s Gershon Iskowitz Prize 2019.

The Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto has named Ken Lum the winner of its 2019 Gershon Iskowitz Prize, which comes with a $50,000 purse and a solo exhibition at the museum. The award, which is administered by the late Canadian artist’s eponymous foundation, is presented annually to a Canadian artist. Lum is best known for his canvases that pair images with text and his reconfigurations of motel and mini-mall signs. The artist, who was born in Vancouver, has been a professor at several arts colleges around the world, including the University of British Columbia, and currently teaches at the University of Pennsylvania. His work was the subject of a solo exhibition at CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts in San Francisco in 2018 and has been included in the 2014 Whitney Biennial, Documenta 11 in 2002, and the 2001 Venice Biennale, among others.

The Best Art Books of the Decade

Alex Greenberger published a survey of the best art books published from 2010 to 2019, ranked in order of importance. – Read full article at ARTnews, December 4th, 2019:

>>>>> Number 1: „2016 in Museums, Money, and Politics“ by Andrea Fraser (2018)

Greenberger: „Where would we be without Andrea Fraser’s „2016 in Museums, Money, and Politics“? This book has become a touchstone at a time when activists are calling out board members for their political leanings. Fair criticisms have been levied against it—a volume consisting solely of listed contributions made by museum trustees to U.S. Presidential election campaigns shouldn’t cost $125, for one. (And most of the information is available for free online, anyway.) But seeing it all collected neatly in one tome is powerful—as a cool-headed study, an intelligent research-based artwork, and a clarion call for change all in one.“

„2016 in Museums, Money, and Politics“ by Andrea Fraser (Westreich Wagner Publications, the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, and the MIT Press, 2018)

>>>>> Number 9: „Painting 2.0: Expression in the Information Age“ (2016)

Including works by  Andrea FraserHans-Jörg Mayer, John Miller, Heimo Zobernig

Greenberger: „This book (and the show that accompanied it, which first opened at Munich’s Museum Brandhorst in 2016) set out with the broad goal of “revis[ing] the history of painting since 1960.” Shockingly, for a legacy so deeply chronicled, it succeeded. Painting 2.0 effectively resuscitated a medium that had long risked “marginalization,” as art historian David Joselit put it in an interview with ARTnews, and it presaged a wave of figurative painting that would come out of Europe and America in the years since.“

„Painting 2.0: Expression in the Information Age“ edited by Achim Hochdoerfer, David Joselit, and Manuela Ammer (Prestel, 2016)
