Europa!

Haben Immanuel Kant im 18. und Victor Hugo im 19. Jahrhundert bereits die "Vereinigten Staaten von Europa" als Projekt herbeigesehnt, so scheint die Formierung dieses Bündnisses seit der deutschen Wiedervereinigung, der Einführung des Euro und den EU-Erweiterungen seit Ende des Kalten Krieges realer geworden zu sein. Jedoch ist kein vollkommen politischer Zusammenschluss gelungen, mit einer übernationalen Regierung, einem gemeinsamen Steuersystem und einheitlich bindender Rechtsprechung. Die gleichzeitig seit den 1980er Jahren stattfindende Neoliberalisierung aller Lebensbereiche hat die Schere zwischen Arm und Reich aufgemacht und Europa gespalten. Spürbares Symptom ist das Erstarken populistischer Parteien in ganz Europa, die sich mit nationalistischen Parolen gegen die europäische Idee in Stellung bringen.

Seit den 1980er Jahren beschäftigt sich Luca Vitone mit der Idee der Konstruktion und Repräsentation von Orten und den verschiedenen Zeichensystemen, die einen Ort in all seinen geografischen, politischen, sozialen, kulturellen und poetischen Dimensionen ausmachen. Viele seiner Installationen und Gemälde können als mentale Landschaften verstanden werden, die anhand von vor Ort gefundenen zivilisatorischen Überresten (Staub, Abfall, Nahrungsmittel) geschaffen wurden. Seine "Monochromien" sind konzeptuelle Selbstportraits der Orte, mit deren Materialien sie entstanden sind.

Für Europa!, seine fünfte Einzelausstellung mit der Galerie, hat Luca Vitone eine neue Serie von monochromen Staub-Aquarellen geschaffen, die europäische Institutionen repräsentieren und mit dem Staub der jeweiligen Orte gemalt sind. Vitone ließ sich Staub aus den Räumen der Europäischen Zentralbank, Frankfurt/Main, dem Europäischen Parlament, Brüssel und dem Europäischen Gerichtshof, Luxemburg schicken, um diese in Wasser zu lösen und sowohl direkt auf die Galeriewände als auch auf große Papiere aufzutragen. Die mit Kirschholz gerahmten Aquarelle sind auf den Staubwänden platziert. Die raumfüllende Installation ist minimalistisch und gleichwohl monumental. Staub ist das unbedeutendste Element von Zeugenschaft gelebten Lebens und – denkt man an die Bedeutung der Institutionen, denen er hier entstammt – gelebter Geschichte. Vitones Portraits sind von ganz unten gemalt, vom kleinsten Teil aufs Ganze. Sie zeigen und werten nichts. Sie setzen in den BetrachterInnen eine Perspektive in Gang, die ihnen ermöglicht sich als ZeugInnen der Gegenwart von Geschichte (Geschichte als gesellschaftlicher Rahmenhandlung) zu sehen. Sie schaffen eine Distanz zu den Ereignissen unserer Geschichte, aus der man sich als in ihr Lebende/r wahrnehmen könnte. Soviel, mehr nicht.

Luca Vitone (*1964 in Genua, lebt in Mailand und Berlin) unterrichtet seit 2006 an der Nuova Accademia Belle Arti in Mailand.
Er nahm an zahlreichen Biennalen und Gruppenausstellungen weltweit teil, u. a.Italienischer Pavillon, 55. Venedig Biennale (2013), Montevideo Biennale (2013), Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt/Main (2011), 4. Tirana Biennale (2008), 8. Europa!

Immanuel Kant in the 18th Century and Victor Hugo in the 19th Century already called for the project of the "United States of Europe". Since the German reunification, the implementation of the Euro and the EU expansions after the end of the cold war, the formation of this alliance seems to be more real. However, a complete political union, with a supranational government, one tax system and a binding common administration of justice as of yet is not in sight. The neo-liberalisation of all areas of life, that simultaneously has been taking place since the 1980s, widens the gap between the rich and the poor and divides Europe deeply. One clear symptom is the uprising of populist parties all over Europe, that use nationalist slogans to position themselves against the European idea.

Since the second half of the 1980s, in his artistic work Luca Vitone engages with the notion of the construction and representation of specific locations and the different modes of expression that define these places in their geographical, political, social, cultural and poetic dimensions. Many of his installations and paintings can also be understood as mental landscapes that were created from locally found remnants of civilisation (dust, waste, food). His "monochromes" are conceptual self-portraits of the places from which they originated.

For Europa!, his 5th solo exhibition with the gallery, Luca Vitone has created a series of watercolours made from dust, that represent different European institutions and that are painted with the dust of the respective places. Vitone was sent dust from the premises of the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, the European Parliament in Brussels and of the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxemburg. He dissolved the different dusts in water to paint the gallery walls with it, as well as large pieces of paper, that were framed with cherry wood and placed on the dusted walls. Vitone's room-filling installation is minimal and monumental at the same time. Dust is the most trivial element of the testimony of lived life, and – if one thinks about the meaning of the institutions, which it here stems from – lived history. Luca Vitone’s portraits are painted from rock bottom, from the smallest part and in terms of the whole. They don’t show or judge anything. They initiate a perspective within the viewers, that grants them the possibility to envision themselves as witnesses of the presence of history (history as social framework). They create a distance to the events of our history, form which one can perceive oneself as living within this history. That much, not more.
