Liebe Kitty,

Wie geht es Dir?

Ich schreibe Dir, weil ich neuerdings ein paar Fragen habe, die mit Dir in Verbindung stehen - Fragen über Deine Existenz und Deine Entwicklung: insbesondere "Was oder wer ist Kitty Pink?"

Um ehrlich zu sein, zögere ich auf diese Fragen Antwort zu geben und zwar, wie ich denke, aus Loyalität dir gegenüber. Ich bin froh, Dich kennengelernt zu haben. Vielleicht habe ich das Bedürfnis Dich zu beschützen, weil ich noch immer dabei bin zu lernen wer Du bist, was Du für mich bist und was Du für andere sein könntest. Wenn ich das aus den Augen verliere, so fürchte ich, könnte unsere Beziehung enden.

Du wirst mich nun vielleicht fragen, und auch ich habe mir diese Frage sehr wohl gestellt: Warum habe ich entschieden Dich auszustellen, und warum gerade jetzt? War es aus eigener Selbstsucht, aus einer Verzweiflung, darin eine Bestätigung für uns zu finden? Bin ich zu kurzsichtig?

Alle Verwicklungen und Konsequenzen, die sich aus diesen Fragen ergeben, könnten einer Wahrheit entsprechen, aber ich vermute, dass Du - wenn Du den Wunsch gehabt hättest, weiterhin in dieser ungreifbaren Distanz zu verharren - die Mauer, die Du um Dich herum aufgebaut hast, mehr geschützt hättest. Ich denke, Du hast Dich im Laufe der Entstehung der Arbeit ausreichend gepanzert. Aber falls Du das nicht hast und ich Dich einem Risiko ausgesetzt habe, möchte ich mich dafür entschuldigen. Selbst wenn Du meine Entscheidung in Frage stellst, spüre ich noch immer, wie sehr Du das Spiel und die Provokation genießt. Das dürfte es sein, was dich ernährt.

Ich beginne, all das optimistischer zu sehen. Wenigstens hast du letztlich ein Zuhause, vorläufig.

"The House of Kitty Pink", ist die Realisierung einer Fantasie. Kitty Pink kam im vergangenen Herbst zu Greenfield, während dieser in Berlin arbeitete. Ein Prozess, bestehend aus einer Kombination aus Forschung und Recherche zusammen mit der Nutzung unbewusster und intuitiver Methoden, ermöglichte die konzeptuelle Entwicklung dieser Arbeit.

Mathiew Greenfield erhielt seinen Abschluss (MFA) im Jahre 2012 von der University of California - Los Angeles. 2005 schloss er das Studium der Wirtschaft und visuellen Künste an der Brown University (BA) ab. Er ist momentan Stipendiant von DAAD Artist, zuvor bei Fulbright. Seine Arbeiten wurden ausgestellt in der New Wight Gallery in UCLA, The Wand Berlin, Control Room Los Angeles, LaunchLA, 808 Gallery Boston, im List Art Center der Brown University, und in der Seigfred Gallery der Ohio University. Diese ist seine erste Ausstellung mit der Galerie Nagel Draxler.

Dear Kitty,

How are you?

I am writing to you because I have recently
some questions about your existence and development: most notably, "What or who is Kitty Pink?"

To be honest, I hesitate to fully answer this question, and I think this is out of loyalty to you. I have enjoyed getting to know you. Perhaps I am feeling a need to protect you because I am still learning about what you are, what you want from me, and what you may want from others. If I lose sense of this, I worry that our relationship may dissipate.

You are probably asking me, and I have certainly also asked myself: Why did I chose to expose you, and why now? Was it out of a selfishness, or a desperation to have validation for us? Am I being short-sighted?

Aspects of the implications of these questions may be true, but I also suspect that if you wanted to remain more elusive, the structures that you built around yourself would have been more protected. I have come to think that you already armoured yourself sufficiently over the development of the work, but in case you did not and I put you at risk, I apologize for that. Even if you do question my decision, I still sense that you will also revel in the play and provocation. It may feed you.

I am starting to feel more optimistic about all of this. At the least, you finally have a home, for now.

"The House of Kitty Pink", is a realization of a fantasy. Kitty Pink came to Greenfield last fall while he was working in Berlin. A process of research and reading in combination with the use of unconscious and intuitive methods enabled the development conceptualization of this work.

Mathiew Greenfield received his MFA in 2012 from the University of California - Los Angeles. He received his BA in Economics and Visual Art from Brown University in 2005. He is a current DAAD Artist Scholar and a former Fulbright Scholar. His work has been exhibited at the New Wight Gallery at UCLA, The Wand Berlin, HEIT Berlin, Control Room Los Angeles, LaunchLA, 808 Gallery Boston, List Art Center at Brown University, and the Seigfred Gallery at Ohio University. This is his first exhibition with Galerie Nagel Draxler.
