Toshihiko Mitsuya
Biography
Toshihiko Mitsuya
born / geboren 1979 in Osaka, Japan
lives and works / lebt und arbeitet in Berlin, Germany
Toshihiko Mitsuya's practice is characterized by the use of aluminum foil, which he manipulates and sculpts into intricate forms. In his ongoing project “The Aluminum Garden – Structural Studies of Plants”, he cuts and folds the metal by hand into shapes that seem to breath and live like plants. The reflective surfaces capture and diffuse light, allowing the sculptures to blend into their surroundings and oscillate between reality and illusion.
The expansive outdoor installations Mitsuya creates evolve over time, as living organisms and natural elements interact with the sculptures and gradually transform them in response to their environment. Mitsuya’s “gardens” thus become meditations on coexistence – between civilization and ecology, between human gesture and natural processes. His fascination with instability stems from early encounters with natural disasters, shaping a worldview in which transience is accepted as a fundamental principle of life. Mitsuya's work transcends the boundary between detail and fantasy: he creates an interplay between the artificial and organic that raises questions about materiality, transience and interaction.
