Press Release
At this year’s Art Unlimited we will present together with Mitchell-Innes & Nash Martha Rosler’s famous series Body Beautiful, or Beauty Knows No Pain. For the first time, it will be shown with the original documents from the mid 1960s/ early 1970s from which Martha Rosler created her photomontages.
In Body Beautiful, or Beauty Knows No Pain Martha Rosler extracts depictions of womens’ bodies from popular media sources – glossy print ads and men’s magazines – and reassembles them in ways that upend the original messages. Rosler is largely concerned with the external pressures, expectations, and fantasies projected upon women and the exploitation of their labor. With their fragmented materiality, the works expose the glaring commodification of women’s bodies, posed, segmented, and packed like products for consumption; in some, Rosler reconceives images of women meant for male consumption as gestures of defiance and expressions of liberation. The presentation gives viewers the opportunity of seeing for the first time the original documents from the mid-1960s/early 1970s from which Rosler created her famous photomontages.
Martha Rosler (born in New York) works in video, photography, text, installation, and performance. She often addresses matters of the public sphere and landscapes of everyday life especially in relationship to women. For many years, Rosler has produced works about war and the narratives of national security. Rosler lives and works in New York.
